The Shrine of the Flame Beneath is the most sacred religious structure within the nation of Urzakar and serves as the spiritual heart of its flame-bound society. Rising from a vast temple complex constructed of black ashstone and obsidian, the shrine is crowned by a towering pillar of living fire fed by a natural gas vent deep beneath the earth.
This flame has burned continuously for centuries. Travelers approaching Urzakar often report seeing its glow long before the city itself becomes visible, rising against the night sky like a distant second sun.
According to preserved Urzakar records, the flame first erupted during the early construction of the city’s founding temple shortly after the Miradorn exiles settled within the volcanic gorge known as Velkaara’s Maw. The sudden ignition of the subterranean vent was interpreted by the early priesthood as a direct manifestation of Velkaara’s divine presence.
Rather than extinguish the fire, the settlers chose to build their temple around it, transforming the natural eruption into the central focus of their religious devotion.
The shrine complex is constructed in descending concentric terraces that lead toward the central flame chamber. Massive runes of containment are carved along the inner walls of the structure, regulating the flow of gas that feeds the fire. These ancient bindings are maintained by the Flamebound Clergy, who believe that without them the flame would grow uncontrollably and consume the entire temple district.
At the heart of the shrine stands the Flame Pillar itself — a roaring column of fire rising through an open shaft in the temple roof, visible from nearly every district within the city.
One of the most important rites within Urzakar society is the Sacred Ascent. Upon reaching maturity, each child born within the city must walk barefoot through the ash-lined paths of the outer temple and stand before the flame for the first time.
The ascent is performed in complete silence. No priest speaks during the ritual, and no instruction is given once the initiate reaches the inner chamber. Witnesses describe the moment as profoundly transformative. Some initiates collapse in tears, others kneel in reverence, while a few leave with expressions hardened by what they claim to have seen within the fire.
Regardless of the reaction, Urzakar tradition maintains that no one who gazes upon the flame for the first time returns unchanged.
Amariin Annotation
While the Flamebound Clergy teach that the fire represents the living gaze of Velkaara upon the world, several Amariin scholars note that the shrine’s containment runes are unusually complex for simple vent regulation.
Fragments of older inscriptions suggest the runic network may serve an additional purpose beyond maintaining the flame’s intensity. Some theorize the bindings may actually restrain something deeper within the vent — a possibility the clergy of Urzakar firmly deny.
Despite these speculations, the flame continues to burn without interruption, and the shrine remains the central pillar of faith for the citizens of Urzakar.
