The Rashakar are an elite desert warrior order originating from the nation of Maroshil and widely feared throughout the dunes of the Zarakh-Sul Desert. Their reputation stems from their mastery of anti-cavalry warfare, a discipline rarely perfected in desert environments where mounted combat often dominates.
The order takes its name from the distinctive weapon carried by its warriors: the Rashad Blade. This long crescent polearm was engineered specifically to counter mounted charges, allowing a Rashakar fighter to strike both horse and rider within the brief moment of a cavalry pass.
Unlike many desert combatants who rely primarily on bows or curved swords, Rashakar warriors train to operate in coordinated spear formations capable of halting cavalry advances. Their battlefield doctrine emphasizes speed, timing, and precision, enabling a small unit of fighters to collapse mounted formations that would otherwise overwhelm conventional infantry.
Their method of combat follows a brutal but efficient sequence. As a mounted enemy charges, the Rashakar thrust the blade toward the horse’s chest or forelegs, disrupting the momentum of the charge. In the same motion, the crescent edge of the weapon sweeps upward to strike the rider as they pass.
When executed properly, the maneuver disables both targets within seconds. Because of this tactic, the Rashakar are often referred to across Serathorne as the Horsekillers of the Dunes.
Training within the order begins during early adolescence and typically lasts close to a decade. Initiates must master rapid polearm thrust techniques, rotational slashing strikes, and specialized forms of movement designed for fighting across loose sand and shifting dunes. Endurance training is particularly severe, with recruits expected to march and spar for extended periods beneath the harsh desert sun.
A particularly dangerous phase of their training involves simulated cavalry charges, where recruits practice defensive formations against mounted riders using wooden polearms. Many trainees fail to complete this stage.
Rashakar warriors favor mobility over heavy protection. Their traditional equipment includes layered leather armor suited to desert heat, a wrapped headcloth to protect against sandstorms, and a curved dagger carried as a secondary weapon should their polearm be lost.
Outside of open warfare, the Rashakar often serve as caravan guardians, desert patrol forces, and elite soldiers within Maroshil’s military structure. However, they rarely operate far from the desert landscapes where their tactics remain most effective.
Amariin Annotation
Military observers note that Rashakar formations represent one of the most specialized infantry doctrines recorded in Serathorne. Their entire discipline was developed to counter mounted warfare in open desert terrain, a strategic adaptation that few other cultures have successfully replicated.
Several generals have attempted to recruit Rashakar units for campaigns beyond the Zarakh-Sul Desert, but historical records indicate their effectiveness diminishes significantly in forested, mountainous, or urban environments where cavalry maneuverability is already limited.
Despite this limitation, their mastery within the desert remains unmatched.
