Urzakar stands as one of the most severe theocratic civilizations recorded within Serathorne. Built within the storm-choked gorge known as Velkar’s Maw, the city emerged from the exile of Miradorn refugees who were driven from their homeland and forced into a land believed by many to be cursed.

The earliest generations suffered immense loss. Ash storms, volcanic tremors, and famine claimed many of the first settlers. Yet those who survived forged alliances with neighboring Khorrundar stonecraft clans, trading labor and resources in exchange for shelter, architectural knowledge, and the right to build within the volcanic valley.

What arose from this fragile beginning was not a kingdom in the traditional sense but a shrine-city built around devotion to flame and ash.

The capital city of Urzakar was constructed in concentric rings of obsidian and ashstone, designed both for defense and ritual procession. Surrounding settlements serve specialized purposes within the broader faith-driven economy of the region. Vharrek is known for its smoke-brewed glassworks and markets trading in funeral oils and cremation resins. Mor’Khaleth houses the great flame-forges and scriptoriums where sacred texts and ritual bindings are preserved. Zharrekh, often called the Ash-Crypt City, serves as the ceremonial site where the dead are burned and their names offered to the flame.

Political authority within Urzakar is formally structured as a noble hierarchy, yet true power resides with the Flamebound Clergy. These priests and seers act as interpreters of divine will for Velkaara and Nhar’zul, whose influence dominates every aspect of civic life.

Noble houses maintain their status only through continual demonstration of devotion. Annual offerings of blood, wealth, or kin must be given to the flame to reaffirm their right to rule. Failure to provide such sacrifice results in immediate loss of standing within the city.

The population is divided into a rigid caste structure. High Nobles claim descent from the original Miradorn exiles who first endured the trials of Velkar’s Maw. Beneath them stand the Flamebound clergy, who wield spiritual and political authority through their service to the gods. Commoners comprise the majority of Urzakar’s population, working as artisans, ash tenders, merchants, and servants within the sacred economy of the city.

The lowest caste is known as the Ash-Forged. These individuals include criminals, heretics, and war captives who are branded and repurposed for the harshest labor within the ash pits and ritual fires. Many serve only briefly before being claimed by the flames they tend.

Central to Urzakar’s identity is the Shrine of the Flame Beneath. Within this vast temple complex burns the largest sacred fire known in Serathorne, its height and intensity regulated through ancient runic bindings carved into the surrounding stone by the earliest Flamebound priests.

Every child of Urzakar must undertake the Sacred Ascent to the shrine upon reaching maturity. Walking barefoot through the ash paths of the outer city, they approach the towering flame in silence and witness it for the first time. This ritual marks their passage into adulthood, and no citizen is said to leave the shrine unchanged.

Amariin Annotation

Reports collected from traveling observers describe a hidden faction known as the Veilmarked operating beyond the authority of the Flamebound clergy. These individuals are believed to conduct unsanctioned rites within the ashwoods beyond the city walls, seeking visions from Velkaara and Nhar’zul through blood offerings and forbidden symbols.

Official temple records deny the existence of such sects. However, repeated sightings of scorched ritual circles and bone-ash deposits within the surrounding forests suggest the possibility of clandestine worship outside the sanctioned hierarchy.

Some Amariin scholars speculate that the Veilmarked represent an older form of devotion predating the formal clergy of Urzakar.
